Europe on the Edge
Before 1914, Europe seems peaceful but is tense.
- 🔫 Militarism: Arms race, especially navies
- 🤝 Alliances: Triple Alliance vs. Triple Entente
- 🏳️ Imperialism: Competition for colonies
- 🇫 Nationalism: Strong pride, sometimes hatred
These forces create a powder keg. It only needs a spark.
The Spark in Sarajevo
28 June 1914:
- Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary visits Sarajevo
- Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip assassinates him
- Austria-Hungary blames Serbia and sends an ultimatum
What could have been a local crisis becomes global because of alliance promises.
The July Crisis Dominoes
Key steps:
1. Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia
2. Russia mobilizes to protect Serbia
3. Germany backs Austria-Hungary, declares war on Russia and France
4. Germany invades Belgium to reach France
5. Britain enters war to defend Belgian neutrality
Within weeks, most of Europe is at war.
Who Fights Whom?
Two main sides:
- Allies: Britain, France, Russia, later Italy, U.S., others
- Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria
Many colonies and dominions (Canada, India, Australia, African colonies) are drawn in, making this a truly world war.
