Chapter 1: What Was the Cold War?
A War Without Big Battles
The Cold War was a long time of tension after World War II.
- No large direct battles between the main sides
- Lots of fear, spying, and threats
- Countries built more and more powerful weapons
It is called “cold” because the superpowers did not fight each other face‑to‑face with armies.
The Two Superpowers 🌍
After World War II, two countries became superpowers:
- United States (USA)
- Soviet Union (USSR)
They were very strong in:
- Military (weapons, armies)
- Economy (money, factories)
- Influence (other countries listened to them)
They each wanted the world to follow their way of life.
Different Ideas, Different Worlds
The USA and USSR disagreed about how countries should be run.
- USA: democracy, many parties, private businesses
- USSR: communism, one party, government controls business
These ideas are called ideologies.
> Two big teams with different rules, both trying to win followers.
How Long Did It Last?
The Cold War started around 1945, right after World War II.
It ended around 1991, when the Soviet Union broke apart.
So it lasted for about 45 years. That’s longer than most of your teachers have been alive!
