Chapter 1: Fuel For The Body
What Is Nutrition?
Nutrition is how your body gets and uses food for energy, growth, and repair.
Think of food as fuel + building blocks:
- Fuel → daily energy
- Building blocks → muscles, organs, skin
Poor nutrition can lead to tiredness, slower thinking, and disease.
> What you eat today shapes how you feel tomorrow.
Daily Energy Needs 🔥
Your body uses energy for:
- Basal needs: breathing, heartbeat
- Movement: walking, sports
- Growth & repair: especially in teens
Energy is measured in calories (kcal).
If you eat more calories than you use → weight gain.
If you eat less → weight loss.
Balance is key, not perfection.
Macronutrients vs. Micronutrients
- Macronutrients: carbs, proteins, fats → give calories
- Micronutrients: vitamins, minerals → no calories, but vital
Macronutrients are like the gasoline.
Micronutrients are the engine oil and tiny parts.
You need both for a smooth-running body.
Nutrient Density 🥗
Nutrient-dense foods give lots of vitamins, minerals, and fiber for relatively few calories.
Examples:
- Vegetables and fruits
- Beans and lentils
- Nuts and seeds (energy-dense but nutrient-rich)
Compare: 150 kcal of chips vs. 150 kcal of carrot sticks + hummus.
More nutrients = better deal.
