Chapter 1: Money Mindset And Goals
Why Personal Finance Matters
Personal finance is how you earn, save, spend, and grow your money.
It helps you:
- Avoid debt stress 😰
- Reach goals (college, car, travel)
- Handle emergencies
> Money is a tool, not a score.
We’ll build skills to control your money instead of letting money control you.
Needs vs. Wants
Understanding this difference guides smarter choices.
- Needs: basics to live
- Food, rent, utilities, medicine
- Wants: nice but not required
- New video game, branded shoes, eating out
Ask before buying:
1. Is this a need or a want?
2. Can I get a cheaper version?
3. What am I giving up later to get this now?
Setting Money Goals 🎯
Goals give your money a job.
Good goals are SMART:
- Specific: "Save for a used bike"
- Measurable: "$200"
- Achievable: "$20/month"
- Realistic: fits your income
- Time-bound: "in 10 months"
Write 1 short-term goal (under 1 year) and 1 long-term goal (over 1 year).
Short-Term vs. Long-Term
Short-term goals (STG)
- Under 1 year
- Examples: headphones, class trip, small debt
Long-term goals (LTG)
- Over 1 year
- Examples: college, car, apartment deposit
Balance both:
- Always fund at least one LTG
- Leave space for fun STGs so you stay motivated 🙂
