Chapter 1: What Is Photosynthesis?
Meet Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is how green plants make their own food.
They use:
- π light from the Sun
- π§ water from the soil
- π¬οΈ carbon dioxide from the air
They turn these into sugar for energy and oxygen for us to breathe.
> No photosynthesis, no plant food, less air for us!
Why It Matters To You
Every time you eat:
- Bread, rice, fruit
- Salad, fries, or even pasta
You are eating energy that started in plants.
Animals eat plants (or eat animals that ate plants). All this begins with photosynthesis.
Key idea: Photosynthesis is the start of most food chains. ππ¦
The Simple Formula
We can say photosynthesis in words:
> carbon dioxide + water + light β sugar + oxygen
- Sugar: plant food, plant energy
- Oxygen: gas we breathe
You donβt need to know the chemical symbols yet. Just remember: plants take in air and water, use light, and make food and oxygen.
Where It Happens
Photosynthesis mostly happens in leaves.
Leaves have tiny parts called chloroplasts filled with chlorophyll (the green stuff).
Chlorophyll:
- Soaks up sunlight like a solar panel
- Gives plants their green color
No green parts, no photosynthesis!
