Chapter 1: Core Rules and Court Basics
Objective of the Game
Basketball is played by two teams of five.
Main goal:
- Score by shooting the ball through the opponentβs hoop
- Prevent the other team from scoring
Key ideas:
- The ball must be dribbled or passed
- Players cannot just run while holding the ball
- Team with more points at the end wins
Everything else in the rulebook supports these basics.
Court Lines and Areas
Important markings:
- Baseline: out-of-bounds line under each basket
- Sidelines: long edges of the court
- Half-court line: divides frontcourt and backcourt
- Three-point line: arc for 3-point shots
- Free-throw line: for foul shots
- Paint/Key: colored rectangle near the hoop
Knowing these lines helps you understand violations and spacing.
Scoring System
Points per made basket:
- 3 points: shot from behind the three-point line
- 2 points: any other field goal
- 1 point: each successful free throw
Other notes:
- A shot counts if released before the buzzer
- Tip-ins and dunks follow the same 2- or 3-point rules
Smart shot selection is a mix of distance, defense, and time left.
Starting and Restarting Play
- Game begins with a jump ball at center circle
- Referee tosses ball up; two centers jump to tip it
- After baskets, the other team inbounds from baseline
- After violations, ball is inbounded nearest the spot
- After some fouls, play restarts with inbounds; after shooting fouls, with free throws
Inbounds passes must be made within 5 seconds.
