Chapter 1: Tiny Habits, Big Change
What Is a Habit?
A habit is something you do almost without thinking.
- Brushing your teeth πͺ₯
- Checking your phone
- Tying your shoes
Some habits help you. Some do not.
James Clear, in Atomic Habits, says:
> Small habits, repeated daily, create big results.
This course shows how tiny changes can slowly change your whole life.
The 1% Rule
You donβt need a huge change.
If you get just 1% better each day:
- Read 2 more pages
- Do 1 more push-up
- Go to bed 5 minutes earlier
Over time, these tiny wins stack up like blocks.
Bad news: 1% worse also stacks up.
Key idea: Small choices matter a lot over months and years.
Goals vs. Systems
Goal: What you want.
System: How youβll get there.
- Goal: βGet an A in math.β
- System: βDo 10 minutes of practice daily.β
- Goal: βRun a 5K.β
- System: βWalk or run after school.β
Focus more on systems than goals. Systems are habits you repeat.
Good vs. Bad Habits
Good habits:
- Reading π
- Moving your body
- Being kind
Bad habits:
- Too much screen time
- Always snacking
- Putting homework off
Habits are not about being a βgoodβ or βbadβ person.
Theyβre just paths you walk many times.
You can choose better paths, one tiny step at a time.
